Blessing of the Animals occurs in our gymnasium on the October Sunday closest to the celebration of St. Francis of Assisi's birthday. Not only does this celebration bring people together to give thanks for the animals who enrich their lives -- it connects God's creatures themselves, who bring great comfort, safety and pleasure to us. Church members of every age and people in the wider community bring their animals to be blessed. Over the years, Pastor Lee has anointed pet snakes, one potbelly pig, fish, newts, cats, dogs and several very anxious guinea pigs.
St. Francis of Assisi is known as the patron Saint for the protection of animals. He was a lover of all creation and a champion of justice, born in the late 12th century into an Italian family of wealth and prosperity. Francis called Christians to a life of humility, simplicity and service. With others, he worked to care for the poor.
